Implementation of Economic
Diplomacy as a new focus of Tanzania’s Foreign policy has led to the Tanzania
High Commission in London to become the centre for promotion of Investment,
Trade and Tourism (ITT) in the area of accreditation.
The social-economic liberalisation policies and institutional reforms
taking place since early 1990 in Tanzania have created an enabling environment
to attract non Tanzanians to invest and trade with Tanzania. The policies also
provide more opportunities for tourists to visit the country and enjoy their
stay.
Among the reforms was the Government’s withdrawal from direct running
business. Its role has now been that of a policy co-ordinator and regulator. It
is encouraging the establishment and expansion of the private sector, which it
recognises as the engine for economic development and sustainability.
To facilitate the implementation
of Economic Diplomacy the Government has opened trade centres, fully charged
with the task of ITT promotion, under the country’s diplomatic missions abroad.
The Tanzania Trade Centre in London is an example.
The Centre works closely with the
several government institutions co-ordinating the three functions, including
the Tanzania Tourists Board (TTB), Parastatal Sector Reform Commission (PSRC)
and the Tanzania Investment Centre
(TIC).
